Artist of Week: Kehinde Wiley (b. 1977, CA)
Posted on 01:20 by the great khali
Kehinde Wiley is certainly the Artist of Week. With this week's opening at the Jewish Museum of New York, the Los Angeles native and New York-based visual artist has firmly cemented himself within history's religious arts tradition. He is the contemporary descendent of a long line of religious portraitists--including Rubens, Velázquez, Titian, and others--Wiley engages the signs and visual rhetoric of the heroic, powerful, majestic, and sublime in his representation of urban black and brown men found throughout the world.
