10 years of growing (and moving) for Indy Museum of Contemporary Art

INDIANA - The Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art had no physical address when its board met for the first time in April 2002 or even when its inaugural exhibition rolled out a year later. The museum -- commonly known as iMOCA or Indy Moca -- became a place to visit during the past decade, initially occupying a building in the Indiana Avenue cultural district and now residing in Fountain Square. One more move is in iMOCA's future, but not one of great distance, according to interim executive director Shauta Marsh. [link]

She credits Efroymson for iMOCA's operating model in which guest curators oversee exhibits. "The art world in New York is very different than the art world in Los Angeles," Marsh said. "If we can bring in a curator from L.A. or from New York, we're able to provide the most varied shows possible." The museum strives to present two national shows, two regional shows and two local shows per year. By programming six to eight months in advance -- in contrast to longer cycles at the Indianapolis Museum of Art -- it's easier for iMOCA to showcase rising talent, Marsh said.
